Healthcare in Bali

Southern Bali has a solid cluster of private hospitals geared toward foreigners, with English-speaking doctors and walk-in availability. The healthcare itself is affordable. The real risks are motorbike injuries, dengue, and being far from a hospital when something goes wrong in Ubud or the north.

The system at a glance

Public hospitals are basic and Indonesian-speaking. Private international hospitals in Kuta, Denpasar, and Nusa Dua are where foreigners go. Outside southern Bali, options are limited โ€” Ubud has clinics but no major hospital.

BIMC Hospital (Kuta and Nusa Dua) is the expat default. Siloam Hospitals Bali is JCI-accredited and slightly cheaper. Kasih Ibu Hospital in Denpasar is a good mid-range option for longer-term residents.

For routine blood work, Prodia labs offer walk-in panels at roughly half the price of hospital labs. No referral needed.

Navigating care

How to get an appointment

Walk in. The norm at most clinics and hospitals. No appointment needed for GPs or ER.

WhatsApp the hospital. BIMC and Siloam both take appointment requests via WhatsApp. Useful for specialists.

Ask which day your specialist is in. Doctors here often practice at multiple hospitals. Afternoon slots are most common โ€” they do public hospital rounds in the morning.

Pharmacies

Kimia Farma and Guardian are the main chains. Many medications that need prescriptions in Western countries are sold OTC here, including some antibiotics. Bring the generic drug name. Controlled substances are strictly regulated โ€” Indonesia has severe drug laws. No formal night pharmacy rotation. Hospital pharmacies at BIMC and Siloam are open 24/7. Kimia Farma branches in Kuta close around 22:00โ€“23:00.
