Healthcare in Goa

Most visitors to Goa stay in North Goa beach villages, often 40 minutes or more from the large hospitals around Panaji. The free 108 ambulance goes to a government hospital by default, so plan how you would reach a private one.

Healthcare in Goa

India has no reciprocal health agreement, so an EHIC or GHIC is not valid here. Government hospitals charge foreigners the full state-scheme rate for non-emergency care. Most foreigners use private hospitals and claim on travel insurance.

Goa Medical College and Hospital at Bambolim is the main public trauma hospital. Manipal Hospital Goa in Dona Paula and Healthway Hospital in Old Goa are the large private options. Mapusa, nearer the beaches, has North Goa District Hospital and the private Vrundavan Hospital.

Standalone diagnostic labs charge less than hospital labs, and many collect samples at home. Results usually come back the same or next day.

Getting seen as a foreigner in Goa

For a private emergency department, do not rely on 108. The crew takes you to a government hospital by default and may refuse a private one. Phone the private hospital's own ambulance, or take a taxi if you can.

A one-doctor village clinic is the first stop for minor problems. It charges a fraction of a hospital outpatient fee. Hospital consultants see outpatients only on set days, so phone first.

Call your insurer's assistance line before any planned admission. International insurers rarely bill Goa hospitals directly without a guarantee of payment. For outpatient visits, pay at the desk and claim back.

What healthcare costs in Goa

You pay outpatient consult fees at the registration desk. Emergency and inpatient bills are itemised, so no single price exists for a visit. Private hospitals ask self-paying patients for a deposit before admission.

Pharmacies

Many chemists sell common antibiotics without a prescription, although the law forbids it. Sedatives and other Schedule H1 drugs are stricter, and each sale goes in a register. Chemists dispense from the doctor's handwritten prescription slip. Late at night, try the pharmacy at a 24-hour private hospital. Carry generic names, since Indian brand names differ.

Health tips

Common visitor health risks in Goa

Scooter crashes

Helmets are compulsory for rider and pillion. Police say most crashes involve no other vehicle.

Rip currents

Swim between the flags and never after drinking. Beaches close to swimmers in the monsoon.

Monsoon dengue

Dengue, malaria and chikungunya rise from June to September. Use repellent all day.

Emergency

Emergency number: 108

108 sends a free ambulance to a government hospital by default. 112 in Goa is mainly the police line.

English with doctors, slower on the 108 line

Doctors train in English. 108 operators may not be fluent, so give a landmark slowly or ask a local to call.

Frequently asked questions

Can I ask the 108 ambulance to take me to a private hospital in Goa?

No, not by default. The 108 service takes patients to a government hospital, such as Goa Medical College at Bambolim. For a private emergency department, phone that hospital's own ambulance.

Is Goa rabies-free?

No. Goa was declared a rabies controlled area in 2021, and rabid dogs and a human death have been recorded since. Start post-exposure shots the same day after any bite or scratch.

How far are the hospitals from the North Goa beaches?

North Goa District Hospital in Mapusa is roughly 15 to 20 minutes from Anjuna or Assagao. The large private hospitals and the state trauma hospital are roughly 35 to 50 minutes away, and further from Arambol.
