Where Vyvanse and Elvanse Are Illegal: The Country-by-Country Legal Status List
Lisdexamfetamine is a banned substance in Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, and several other countries. Carrying it across the wrong border can mean arrest.
Lisdexamfetamine at the border: where the legal risk is real
Lisdexamfetamine, the active ingredient in Vyvanse and Elvanse, is an amphetamine prodrug. That word, amphetamine, is what gets travellers into trouble. In Japan, Thailand, and Indonesia, amphetamines carry blanket bans with no medical exemption pathway. Possession at the border is a criminal offence, not an administrative one.
This article maps the legal status of lisdexamfetamine country by country. The focus is on what changes at customs, not on the condition it treats.

Always verify the current rules with the destination country's embassy or drug regulatory authority, and consult your prescribing clinician before travelling.
Countries where lisdexamfetamine is an outright ban
Japan classifies amphetamines under the Stimulants Control Act. Lisdexamfetamine has no approved medical use in Japan[1] and cannot be imported under any personal-use exemption. Carrying Vyvanse or Elvanse into Japan, even with a valid foreign prescription, risks criminal prosecution.
Thailand lists amphetamine as a Category 1 narcotic under the Narcotics Act B.E. 2522. No medical exemption exists for Category 1 narcotics[2] in Thailand. Possession carries a minimum five-year prison sentence. Lisdexamfetamine is metabolised to d-amphetamine in the body, which is sufficient for a positive amphetamine test.
Indonesia classifies amphetamines as Category I narcotics under Law No. 35 of 2009. Importing a Category I narcotic into Indonesia[3] carries sentences of five to fifteen years under Article 113. The ban applies regardless of prescription documentation.
The United Arab Emirates classifies amphetamines under Federal Decree No. 14 of 1995 on Narcotic and Psychotropic Substances. Lisdexamfetamine is not registered by the Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE), the regulator formed in December 2025. No import permit pathway exists for unregistered amphetamines.
China classifies amphetamine-type stimulants under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Regulations. Lisdexamfetamine is not approved by China's National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) and cannot be imported for personal use.
South Korea lists amphetamines as psychotropic substances under the Act on the Management of Narcotic Drugs. The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) does not recognise lisdexamfetamine as an approved therapeutic, and no personal import permit exists for amphetamine-class drugs.
Countries with a controlled import route (permit required)
France approved lisdexamfetamine in 2025 under the brand name Xurta. Before that, it was entirely unavailable. Even now, Xurta is classified as a narcotic under French law[4], requiring specialist initiation. Travellers bringing Elvanse or Vyvanse into France from outside the Schengen Area must carry a certificate from their home prescriber and cannot exceed a 30-day supply under Schengen rules. See our full guide for Elvanse or Vyvanse in France for more information on what you need to bring.
Portugal dispenses lisdexamfetamine as Elvanse. Schengen rules cap the import quantity at a 30-day personal supply with a prescriber's certificate[5]. A Portuguese psychiatrist must write any in-country refill; foreign prescriptions are not dispensable at a Portuguese pharmacy. Our dedicated Elvanse in Portugal guide outlines documentation importation and prescribing rules.
Spain controls ADHD stimulants as psychotropic substances under AEMPS oversight. Travellers must obtain a Permiso de Viajeros from AEMPS before departure. The permit covers a single trip and must match the quantity carried.
Germany classifies amphetamines as narcotics under the Betäubungsmittelgesetz (BtMG). Travellers may carry up to a 30-day supply under a Schengen certificate. The certificate must be obtained from the prescribing physician before travel.
Turkey classifies methylphenidate as a controlled substance, but lisdexamfetamine occupies a different position: it is not approved by the Turkish Medicines and Medical Devices Agency (TITCK). Bringing Vyvanse into Turkey falls into an unregistered-drug grey zone, and customs officers may treat it as a prohibited substance.
Countries where Vyvanse or Elvanse is legally approved
Vyvanse is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is a Schedule II controlled substance under the US DEA[6]. Travellers within the United States can carry it with a valid prescription. Interstate travel does not require an import permit.
Canada approved lisdexamfetamine (Vyvanse) and classifies it under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA). Travellers entering Canada may carry up to a 30-day supply and must declare it at the border.
Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) lists lisdexamfetamine as a Schedule 8 (S8) controlled drug. Travellers need a valid prescription and may carry up to a three-month supply with the appropriate supporting documentation.
The United Kingdom approves Elvanse as a Schedule 2 controlled drug under the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001. Travellers departing or arriving in the UK may carry up to three months' supply with an export or import licence issued by the Home Office.
The provenance trap: why even approved countries carry risk
Approval in one country does not guarantee smooth transit through another. A traveller flying from the UK to Australia via Dubai carries Elvanse legally at origin and destination but crosses UAE airspace and potentially clears a transit checkpoint where amphetamines are prohibited.
The UAE guide for ADHD travellers details the MoHAP permit requirements that applied before the Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) took over in December 2025. The core restriction has not changed: amphetamines remain prohibited without registration, and lisdexamfetamine is not registered.
The same transit risk applies to Singapore, which schedules amphetamines under the Misuse of Drugs Act (MDA). Singapore's Changi Airport is one of the busiest transit hubs in the Asia-Pacific region, and transit passengers are subject to customs inspection.

Frequently asked questions
Can I take Vyvanse to Japan with a valid prescription?
No. Japan's Stimulants Control Act bans amphetamines outright, with no personal-use exemption for any foreign prescription. Lisdexamfetamine is not approved in Japan and cannot be legally imported under any circumstance. Plan a non-amphetamine alternative with your prescriber before travelling.
Is Elvanse allowed in Dubai or other UAE airports as a transit medication?
Lisdexamfetamine is not registered by the Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) and amphetamines are prohibited under UAE Federal Decree No. 14 of 1995. Transit passengers clearing customs at Dubai or Abu Dhabi are subject to UAE law. Carrying Elvanse through UAE airports carries a real legal risk.
What happens if I fly through Singapore with Vyvanse in my bag?
Singapore classifies amphetamines under the Misuse of Drugs Act (MDA) and applies strict penalties including mandatory minimum sentences. If your transit involves clearing Singapore customs or immigration, your medication is subject to inspection. Choose a routing that does not require customs clearance in Singapore.
How much Elvanse can I bring into Germany?
Germany permits up to a 30-day supply under a Schengen travel certificate. The certificate must be issued by your prescribing physician before departure and should list the substance, dose, quantity, and treatment duration. Carry the original packaging with the dispensing label intact.
Is lisdexamfetamine available to buy in Australia as a visitor?
Lisdexamfetamine is a Schedule 8 controlled drug in Australia. Visitors cannot simply purchase it at an Australian pharmacy without a valid Australian prescription. Bring your own supply with supporting documentation from your home prescriber, and do not exceed a three-month quantity.
Can I take Vyvanse from the US to South Korea?
South Korea does not approve lisdexamfetamine and the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) has no personal import permit pathway for amphetamine-class drugs. Taking Vyvanse from the US to South Korea, even with a valid US prescription, risks confiscation and criminal prosecution on arrival.
