Healthcare in Montevideo
Montevideo runs on memberships: residents belong to one provider and pay small capped co-pays inside it. Walk-in prices for visitors are not published, and your EHIC or GHIC is not valid here.
Healthcare in Montevideo
Uruguayan residents are affiliated to one provider, either a private mutualista or the public network, ASSE. Almost all their care then happens inside that institution. Uruguay is outside the EHIC and GHIC schemes, so a European card buys you nothing.
Hospital Británico, on Avenida Italia 2420, is the private hospital foreigners most often use, with a 24-hour emergency department. Hospital Maciel in Ciudad Vieja is a major public emergency hospital, and Hospital de ClÃnicas is the university teaching hospital. Mutualista hospitals such as Asociación Española mainly treat their own members.
Private clinical laboratories take walk-in patients without membership. Their prices are not published online, so ask for a quote first.
Getting seen as a foreigner in Montevideo
For a same-day doctor, a mobile emergency service is often faster than any clinic. These emergencias móviles are paid memberships that send a doctor to your door, and some offer video consultations. SEMM, the best known, takes member calls on 159.
Joining a mutualista generally needs a cédula, which in practice means residency. Some institutions will open a file on a passport, and foreigners can pay a monthly Cuota ASSE. Until then, travel insurance is your cover.
Uruguay's urgency law lets members be treated at the nearest facility with nothing paid at the door. It covers only people who already have a Uruguayan provider. A visitor without one is billed as a private patient.
What healthcare costs in Montevideo
Montevideo charges through membership, not per visit. Members pay a monthly fee plus co-pays, órdenes for consults and tickets for medicines, each capped at UYU 880 since January 2026. Walk-in prices for non-members are not published, so ask before you are seen.

Pharmacies
Every pharmacy medicine sits behind the counter and must be requested. Prescribed medicines need a local prescription, so bring enough of your own supply. Carry the generic name of anything you take regularly. Pharmacies close in the evening, but a rota keeps some open later. A smaller set of all-night pharmacies, authorised by the health ministry, covers the hours after that. Members collect medicines at their mutualista's own pharmacy, while visitors pay the full retail price.
Health tips
Common visitor health risks in Montevideo
Cyanobacteria and beach flags
A red flag with a green cross means no swimming. Avoid the water after heavy rain.
Dengue, occasionally local
Montevideo had local cases in 2024 and 2025. Use repellent in the warm months.
Strong sun, high UV
UV levels run high in summer. Use high-factor sunscreen and seek shade at midday.
Beach-season stomach upsets
Summer clinic visits are mostly heatstroke and gastro. Drink water and keep food chilled.
Emergency
Emergency number: 911
911 is the national emergency line; ask for an ambulance. Private emergency short codes serve members only.
Spanish everywhere, English at Hospital Británico
Consultations and prescriptions run in Spanish. Expats single out Hospital Británico for English-speaking doctors and nurses.
Frequently asked questions
Can a tourist use the Uruguayan urgency law for free emergency care?
No. The law lets people who already have a Uruguayan provider be treated at the nearest facility, with the bill settled between providers. A visitor without a provider is treated and billed separately, so travel insurance matters.
Do I need health insurance to enter Uruguay?
A 2023 decree requires foreigners entering Uruguay to hold health insurance or coverage. It does not appear to have been repealed. Whether border staff check it in 2026 is unconfirmed, so carry your policy details anyway.
Is it safe to swim at Montevideo's city beaches?
Usually, but check the flag at each beach first. In summer, cyanobacteria blooms and run-off after rain lead lifeguards to raise a red flag with a green cross. The Intendencia publishes beach bulletins through the season.
