Healthcare in Kraków

Your EHIC or GHIC works in Kraków wherever a provider holds an NFZ contract, whoever owns it. The private outpatient chains most foreigners use do not. After hours, a free NFZ walk-in GP service spares you the emergency-room queue.

Healthcare in Kraków

Poland's public system runs through the NFZ, the national health fund. Your EHIC or GHIC covers medically necessary state care at NFZ-contracted providers only. The private outpatient chains are self-pay, and the card is useless there.

Szpital Uniwersytecki w Krakowie runs the main university emergency department, at its Prokocim site on Jakubowskiego street. Its ER left the old Kopernika city-centre site in 2020, so older guides give the wrong address.

National lab chains run walk-in collection points across Kraków, with no referral needed and results online.

Getting seen as a foreigner in Kraków

Ask whether the service is NFZ-contracted, not whether the building is private. Scanmed Szpital Świętego Rafała is privately owned, yet treats NFZ patients. Confirm at the desk that your service is contracted before treatment starts.

After hours, use the night and holiday GP service (nocna i świąteczna opieka) for fevers and infections. It runs 18:00 to 08:00 on weekdays and all day at weekends and holidays, walk-in and free under NFZ cover. Sites changed in May 2025, so check the NFZ Kraków website for current ones.

Book private GPs through a doctor-booking platform, where same-day slots are normal. Listings show each clinic's price and let you filter for English-speaking doctors.

Pharmacies

Polish prescriptions are electronic: you get a four-digit code or a printout. Antibiotics are strictly prescription-only. A non-EU prescription falls outside the cross-border rules, so plan on a Polish doctor reissuing it. An EU or EFTA prescription is valid for 30 days, or 7 for antibiotics, and excludes psychotropic medicines. You pay in full and claim any refund at home. The city runs 24-hour pharmacies and holiday duty rotas, with an information line on 12 661 22 40.

Health tips

Common visitor health risks in Kraków

Winter smog in the valley

Inversions trap heating-season smog. With asthma or a heart condition, stay inside on alert days.

Ticks on mountain day trips

Tick-borne encephalitis cases are rising in Poland. Check your skin after Tatra or Ojców hikes.

Icy cobbles in winter

Old Town and Kazimierz streets ice over. Wear shoes with grip to avoid a fall.

Non-EU prescriptions

Bring enough medication for your stay. A non-EU prescription needs a Polish doctor to reissue it.

Emergency

Emergency number: 112

112 operators must speak a foreign language, usually English. 999 reaches the ambulance service directly.

English at private clinics, Polish at public desks

Private chains and most private doctors work in English. Expect Polish-only forms and signs at public emergency departments.

Frequently asked questions

Which emergency number should I call in Kraków?

Call 112 if you do not speak Polish. By law its operators must speak at least one foreign language, most often English, and can bring in an interpreter. 999 reaches ambulance dispatchers, whose English is less certain.

How long will I wait in a Kraków emergency department?

It depends on your triage colour, with targets from immediate for red to 240 minutes for blue. Minor cases often wait hours, because Kraków's departments fill with patients a GP could see.

How bad is the smog in Kraków?

It peaks in the heating season, when inversions trap air in the valley. GIOŚ, the environmental inspectorate, reported PM10 above its information threshold in January and February 2025. On 20 January 2026 the city declared a level III alert.
