Healthcare overview
CHCC's Commonwealth Health Center in Saipan is the territory's main hospital — A&E, maternity, dialysis, basic surgery, and outpatient services for the ~50,000 residents. Tinian Health Center and Rota Health Clinic provide primary and basic urgent care on the smaller islands; serious cases are routinely transferred to Saipan.
For complex care — advanced oncology, complex cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, advanced trauma — patients are typically referred first to Guam Memorial Hospital (about an hour by air), then onward to Hawaii, the Philippines, or the US mainland for tertiary needs. CHCC also coordinates routine specialty visits via visiting clinicians from Guam and Hawaii.
US Medicare is accepted and most US insurance plans operate locally. UK GHIC, EU EHIC, and Asia-Pacific reciprocal arrangements do not apply. Asian visitors often have networked plans through US insurers given the territory's tourism market.
Vaccinations
Recommended
- Routine vaccines up to date
- Hepatitis A
- Typhoid (for stays >2 weeks)
- Japanese encephalitis (for rural extended stays)
Prescriptions and pharmacies
US prescribing rules apply. Most US prescriptions are recognised; other prescriptions usually require a local clinician's re-issue. Bring enough for your stay plus a buffer.
Controlled substances follow US Schedule rules. Opioids, stimulants, and benzodiazepines need a doctor's letter and original packaging on entry.
