Healthcare overview

Liechtenstein runs a compulsory statutory health insurance system modelled on Switzerland's. Residents pay into private insurers regulated by the state, and the system is integrated with Swiss healthcare โ€” most specialty and inpatient care is delivered cross-border in St Gallen, Chur, or Buchs.

The country has a single hospital, the Liechtensteinisches Landesspital in Vaduz, handling general medicine, internal medicine, gynaecology, and a 24-hour emergency department. Anything beyond that is referred into Switzerland or Austria. Wait times are short and standards are equivalent to Switzerland.

Vaccinations

Recommended

  • Routine vaccines up to date
  • Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) for hikers

Prescriptions and pharmacies

Foreign prescriptions are not directly fillable. Bring a doctor's letter listing each medication by generic (INN) name with dose and indication, plus enough supply for your trip. Pharmacies (Apotheke) are private and follow Swiss rules.

Controlled substances (opioids, ADHD stimulants, benzodiazepines) require a Schengen prescription certificate or equivalent documentation if you're carrying more than 30 days' supply. Customs follow Swiss federal narcotics law.
