๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฎ Anguilla Healthcare Guide

Anguilla's healthcare runs through Princess Alexandra Hospital in The Valley, with several private clinics serving the resort areas. The territory's small population means complex tertiary cases are routinely transferred to Antigua, Puerto Rico, or the United States โ€” visitors should carry Caribbean medevac insurance.

Quick facts

  • Emergency number: 911
  • Healthcare system: mixed
  • Average GP visit: $80 USD
  • EHIC/GHIC accepted: No
  • Language barrier: low

Healthcare overview

Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) in The Valley is Anguilla's only public hospital โ€” a ~50-bed facility with A&E, general surgery, maternity, and most common specialty consults for the territory's ~16,000 residents. Outpatient health centres operate in the major districts (Stoney Ground, South Hill, East End).

For complex care that exceeds local capacity โ€” advanced oncology, complex cardiac surgery, transplant, severe trauma โ€” patients are transferred to Mount St John's Medical Centre on Antigua (a 20-minute flight or longer ferry ride), to Centro Mรฉdico in San Juan, Puerto Rico, or to South Florida hospitals. UK GHIC is NOT accepted post-Brexit.

Several private clinics serve the visitor and expat population, including Hughes Medical Centre and Eureka Medical Clinic. Pharmacies are well-stocked for routine medications, but specialty drugs may need ordering from Antigua, Puerto Rico, or Miami โ€” plan ahead with refills.

Vaccinations

Recommended

  • Routine vaccines up to date
  • Hepatitis A
  • Typhoid (for stays >2 weeks)
  • Hepatitis B (selectively)

Prescriptions and pharmacies

Anguilla follows UK-influenced prescribing rules. Bring a doctor's letter for any prescription medication and keep drugs in original labelled packaging. Routine medications are widely available locally; specialty drugs may require advance order.

Controlled substances (opioids, ADHD stimulants, certain benzodiazepines) require a doctor's letter on entry. Cannabis remains illegal despite regional reform conversations.
